If you’re a project manager, chances are you’ve had people ask you…
“Can’t AI do project management, too?”
“Think you’ll lose your job to AI?”
Of course, you have. 🙄

As annoying as that is, AI is managing to curate plans, track budgets, assess risks, and put together reports efficiently now. So, it’s time we talked about the robot in the room — Will AI replace project managers?
We asked some industry experts that inevitable question, so you won’t have to endlessly wonder where you stand. In this blog, we’ll discuss the strides that AIs made, and what that means for project managers.

What AI Can Do Well in Project Management
We believe in giving credit where credit is due.
AI in project management can be pretty impressive when it comes to automating repetitive, mundane, and logic-driven tasks.
Milla Ranta, an industry expert and an edison365 Expert Advisor, who leverages AI to drive lasting change, believes that the best partial-automation opportunities on a project level include, ’scheduling and timeline optimization, resource allocation, status reporting and dashboard updates, risk pattern identification, and quality assurance.’
So, many classic project management tasks can be automated, or at least accelerated.

Today’s AI tools for project managers can:
- Suggest project timelines and schedules.
- Forecast and optimize resource allocation.
- Highlight potential risks using historical data.
- Generate project status reports instantly.
But what do the experts think? We asked edison365 CTO (Chief Technology Officer) and 12X Microsoft MVP, Paul Mather. With more than 18 years in the industry, Paul has seen the life of a project manager long before AI.
“Administrative elements of project management, such as task scheduling, resource forecasting, risk identification and report generation are increasingly being automated with the support of AI-powered tools,” says Paul.

What AI Still Can’t Do (and Why PMs are Essential)
Despite AI’s growing popularity, when it comes to the human vs AI debate, project managers still have the edge.
Project management is often oversimplified, creating a general misunderstanding that it’s just ‘handling tasks, holding meetings, or handing out reports. No wonder your neighbour speculates the AI takeover, right?
The truth is, on its own, AI’s performance in situations which require context, nuance, or judgement often lacks situational awareness and emotional intelligence.
In a recent experiment, Stuart Taylor, our accomplished expert advisor, let AI take charge of an entire project launch, and uncovered some interesting truths. He explained how ‘AI helped a lot with creating documentation, communications drafts, and having a sounding board for difficult decisions. But it didn’t take command – couldn’t make decisions.’
Also, project and portfolio management goes way beyond taskmaster duties.
As Paul Mather mentioned, ”project management isn’t solely about process execution; it also involves stakeholder engagement, and decision making in complex, ambiguous situations.”
It involves managing deadlines, projects, teams, strategy, budgets, and people, too.
While AI can give suggestions, taking the right call often involves more intricate nuances, making AI dependant on human guidance. AI is a trusty sidekick, a great tool to give project managers everything they need to make data-driven decisions and handle project misalignment.

The Verdict: The Future of Project Management
Simply put, AI is only as good as the person using it.
So, no, AI isn’t going to replace project managers. But project managers who can leverage AI, will be replacing those who can’t.
All our experts agreed on one thing—the role of project managers is evolving.
When asked how he sees the role evolving, Paul Mather mentioned that “the project manager’s role will evolve into one that is more strategic and insight-driven, with less time spent on manual coordination and more focus on value delivery and stakeholder alignment.”
There is a growing need for project managers to evolve into ‘strategic facilitators and change enablers, equipped with both AI and people skills,’ says Milla.
“Their role will increasingly focus on guiding transformation, interpreting data insights for stakeholders, and fostering a culture that embraces innovation ethically and sustainably.”
Milla also believes that ‘the responsibility and ownership of validating AI-produced output will remain with project managers.’
The Project Manager of Tomorrow
Well, what does this mean for project managers?
Less time spent on mundane, repetitive tasks, with more time to drive change.

But this can only be possible if PMs are proactive in adopting AI tools to assist with project management tasks such as ideation, planning, reporting, and administrative issues. So, it’s essential to foster strategic thinking, decision making, AI literacy, and communication.
Paul believes that “embracing AI will be essential not just for efficiency, but for maintaining relevance and delivering competitive advantage in high-performing project management organizations.”
Also, as AI becomes more embedded in project delivery frameworks, PMs who fail to adapt risk becoming operational bottlenecks.
Milla urges organisations to take upskilling their PMs seriously. Because without being given the skills and tools to remain relevant in the field, PMs could risk becoming bottlenecks, compromising their future operations.

How Can Project Managers Stay Relevant?
Let’s face it, staying relevant isn’t easy. It requires an open mind, enthusiasm, and endless curiosity.
If you want to stay relevant, you need to embrace AI as a tool to enhance your capabilities. No two ways about it.
So, what can you do to stay current?
- Embrace AI. See how you can leverage it to your benefit. Help it help you.
- Foster your human-centric skills. Strengthen skills that cannot be automated, such as interpersonal, communication, management, and conflict resolution skills.
- Keep Learning. Stay curious and open to new technologies and methodologies. Make sure you’re ahead of the curve, not following it.
Keep this up, and you won’t have to worry about ‘staying relevant’.
It’s Not a Takeover. It’s a Partnership!
It’s not Project Manager Vs AI, but Project Manager X AI.
That’s right! Will AI replace project managers? No, but it will enable them to focus on other aspects to drive change – particularly by reducing the overhead of administrative tasks.
Milla believes that “Their role will increasingly focus on guiding transformation, interpreting data insights for stakeholders, and fostering a culture that embraces innovation ethically and sustainably.”
The future belongs to PMs who can leverage technology to automate classic project management tasks and sharpen their insights.
